Portraits in Motion 01/24/17 To 01/26/17

Flipbook Cinema by and with Volker Gerling
Presented with the PuSh Performing Arts Festival
January 24 – 26, 2017 at 8PM

The flipbook is now a curio to most of us, but for Volker Gerling it’s something much more profound: a mode of moving image that captures the human presence in stillness as much as motion. Gerling embraces the traditions of the magic lantern and the drawing room raconteur. His works are rapidly taken still shots of people, arranged in order to move as they’re flipped through.

The push and the pull, the past and the present, the progress and the regression: this is the inner conflict that exists within a modern woman’s head. Interweaving a cappella harmony, text, and movement – Mouthpiece is a harrowing, humourous, and heart-wrenching journey into the female pysche.
