Khari Wendell McClelland’s Freedom Singer Album Release
A Celebration of Black History
Feb 2, 2018 | Doors 7 PM | Show 8 PM | York Theatre
Khari Wendell McClelland is a diversely talented and ever-evolving artist. Originally from Detroit, Khari has become a darling on the Canadian music scene with reviewers lauding his performances as a clever mix of soul and gospel. Khari collected and interpreted songs that likely accompanied his great-great-great grandmother Kizzy as she fled US slavery into Canada. He uses a range of styles like hip-hop, gospel, folk and soul to create a bridge from the past to the present. The resulting song-cycle, Freedom Singer, became a documentary theatre musical crafted with Project: Humanity’s Andrew Kushnir and CBC’s Jodie Martinson.
Soft Cedar is proud to be presenting the release of the album version of this inspiring and important work. On February 2 at The York Theatre Khari will be joined by The Sojourners, Tonye Aganaba, Desiree Dawson, Jillian Christmas, and many others to release Freedom Singer and celebrate Black history.
