Technicolour Education focuses on the Chinese diasporic experience in Vancouver through generations of immigrant stories. This album was inspired in 2015 when composer and bandleader Robyn Jacob found her great-grandfather's original head tax certificate. It inspired her to explore her maternal family’s immigration to Canada from 1920 to the 1970’s. The resulting songs expand beyond Robyn’s family’s stories, contributing to a larger communal diasporic narrative both within and beyond Canada’s Chinese community. More than a piece of storytelling, Technicolour Education attempts to broaden the acknowledgement of the community's cultural contribution to the construction of the Canadian identity. The album explores themes of resilience, separation, feminism, and distance.
Bio: Described by CBC Music as one of 10 Vancouver acts to watch, Only A Visitor is a quintet that blurs genre boundaries by straddling the line between art music and pop. Classically trained, composer and arranger Robyn Jacob’s eclectic songwriting showcases vocal techniques and arrangements that invoke the Dirty Projectors and Bjork. With asymmetrical rhythms twisted around a pop skeleton, Only A Visitor makes room for themselves between pop and experimental music.
Joined in 2015 by drummer Kevin Romain, bassist Jeff Gammon, and singers Emma Postl and Celina Kurz, Only A Visitor released their EP Tower Temporary. In summer of 2017 they released their first full length album Lines, which was followed by a tour of Eastern Canada, including the Montreal, Toronto and Halifax International Jazz Festivals. In the fall of 2016 Robyn completed a solo music residency at the Banff Centre to begin work on Technicolour Education.
