Soft Cedar Presents: the album release of TARIQ's new record, Telegrams.
On Telegrams, the songs feel like short stories; three-and-a-half minute snippets of fictional lives. A fan of short fiction, TARIQ found characters in stories by some of his favourite authors, including American fiction writer Lorrie Moore and the late Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, and cast them as leads in his songs. Written in his Vancouver apartment on an acoustic guitar, the songs were eventually shaped by an accomplished band featuring Sam Davidson, John Walsh, and Skye Brooks. (Additional contributions from JP Carter, Jesse Zubot, Micajah Sturgess, and Leah Abramson). This core band helped him envision fresh tempos and arrangements, adding layers of texture and melody. The result is a ten-song album with thoughtful lyrics and singable melodies reminiscent of artists like The Mountain Goats, and John K. Samson.
Born in rural Quebec to parents from Pakistan and Fiji, Canada's west coast has definitely found its place in TARIQ's artistic output since he moved to Vancouver in 2006 to become a host for the fan-adored Canadian indie music hub CBC Radio 3. Soon after, he became a member of Vancouver band Brasstronaut who were longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize in 2010 for their record Mt. Chimaera and won SOCAN's Echo Songwriting Prize for the song Hearts Trompet.
