Watching Glory Die
Watching Glory Die 04/22/14 To 05/03/14

A Cultch 13/14 Presentation

Canadian Rep Theatre (Toronto)

Watching Glory Die
Deliberately fictionalized, Watching Glory Die takes a bold leap from recent headlines to forge the visceral lyricism that is the hallmark of Judith Thompson at her most powerful. A riveting yet deeply compassionate portrait of three women – Glory, a chronically disturbed young offender; Rosalee, the girl’s mother; and Gail, a prison guard—inextricably linked by shared helplessness in the face of tragedy. A Canadian Rep Theatre world premiere production directed by Ken Gass and starring Judith Thompson herself in the central tour de force role. Contains Mature Content and Coarse Language.

Quebec separates. Into divided Canada thrown into chaos by shortages and blackouts comes someone with a vision of Utopia where everyone has enough. Someone worth fighting for? Or just another power-broker playing on our worst fears? A futuristic take on Shakespeare’s examination of power, ambition and destiny, 33 Cuts confronts the attitude that we are immune to the instability and violence happening "over there."  Intercutting the text of Julius Caesar with movement, documentary and first person narratives, this piece is evolving with today’s headlines.

1722. Two notorious pirates are vaulted into prison on charges of piracy and murder. But these pirates are starkly different from the hundreds awaiting trial – they are women. Ann Bonny: raised in a family of plantation privilege. Abandoned it all for the thrill of the plunder. Known for her razor wit and equally sharp axe. Mary Read: raised in poverty and disguised as a boy. Climbed the British military ranks to become an esteemed cavalry leader. Disciplined, dutiful and a fervent battlefield executioner. These fierce outlaws spar for the heroine title – until death do they part.

In 2008, Co-Artistic Directors Nick Di Gaetano and Emily Pearlman tried hard to make "an innovative hit play". The process of creating that show was rife with battling egos, hurt feelings, insecurity and full-out, spatula-throwing rage. We’re taking a do-over and staging a reconciliation party/concert that puts a microscope to our tumultuous creative relationship while airing the skeletons in our closets, unpacking our failures and probing the delicate and personal nature of the imagination. This World Premier asks how something that had so much energy and goodwill behind it could produce something so unwanted and excruciating.

A Cultch 13/14 Presentation

Vision Impure (Vancouver) & Nova Dance (Toronto)

DVOTE
At first glance dance artists Noam Gagnon and Nova Bhattacharya seem to come from completely different worlds, but a closer look reveals their shared passion for mining personal experience to create revealing and transcendent performances. DVOTE is their investigation into the dichotomies that separate devotion and submission, the profound and the profane, and sexuality and spirituality. Intimate, voyeuristic, intense, DVOTE enters a world of heady sensuality where fantasies are explored and dreams realized.
